Welcome to the WHO/EU Alcohol Screening and Brief Interventions (SBI) Resources Hub

This hub provides guidance documents, empirical evidence, and examples of SBI implementation and evaluation in different countries. The resourcess cater to various settings such as primary healthcare, social services, and workplaces, illustrating where and how SBI can be leveraged to enhance capacity for preventing and reducing harm caused by alcohol.

Alcohol and Health

Alcohol is linked to over 200 health and injury conditions. Preventing and reducing harm caused by alcohol is a priority for the World Health Organization (WHO), and this goal aligns with broader efforts to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, mental health disorders, and heart disease.

A crucial aspect of addressing the harms caused by alcohol involves enhancing support for professionals so they can effectively provide prevention, health promotion, treatment, and recovery support for individuals with hazardous alcohol use, alcohol use disorders, and any other health conditions caused or exacerbated by alcohol use.

This hub offers a compendium of key resources that professionals, decision-makers, and policymakers can use to implement SBI. Alcohol SBI is an evidence-based framework which enables professionals to:

  • Identify the different levels of risk associated with an individual’s alcohol consumption.
  • Provide brief interventions which encompass meaningful, personalized, supportive, and non-judgmental conversations with individuals about their alcohol use and any risks or harms.
  • Facilitate onward referral for individuals requiring further assessment and specialist treatment options.
